The Days, The Hours, The Moments: Day 236 ~ “I Never Wanted A Cat But…” A tiny kitten shows up on Maisie’s doorstep…

“I Never Wanted A Cat Butโ€ฆ”

Once again I am writing to you all at 8 p.m. and I have not made dinner yet. I was up before my alarm today and have drawn all day long. Maisie never wanted a cat but someone left a tiny crying kitten (Sadly you can’t see it well in this pencil drawing but you will be able to see it well once painted.) on her doorstep. She fell instantly in love with the wee kitten and welcomed her into her home.

I, myself, have always longed to have a cat but I am highly allergic, terribly so. When I was little I can’t tell you how many times I drug home some stray cat or kitten begging my mother to keep it, all the while my eyes were red and practically swollen shut and watering and I was sneezing and more. But I wanted one so badly. My mother would take whoever I brought home out to her friends in the country who had a farm and they would give it a home. Came the day I decided I knew the exact right way to make it alright. I brought a little cat home, and like any good Catholic girl would, I tried to “baptize” it under the running water in the sink. I was nearly clawed to death, the cat ran terrified in 12 directions at once, and my mother drove it out to the farm. I was covered with welts and bleeding and it was the last time I ever tried to have a cat. The “baptism” cured me.

Still in all I admire cats greatly, my daughter Rachel and her family adopted 2 cats a couple or so years ago and they adore those cats. I love to see them but I have to keep my distance and the cats are very shy and basically run upstairs and hide whenever anyone comes over so I am not exposed to enough to set off my allergies too much. My eyes get a little itchy and runny, but not bad. However I could never really have a cat here. BUT, Maisie can!

This tiny kitten will grow up with an odd assortment of brothers and sisters and become one of the family. I’m not sure what part she may play in the story, but now I have a kitten to play with, one that won’t set off my allergies. Ah, the magic of art!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I’ll be painting all weekend. See you on Monday!

Pleased to see a kitten join the menagerie! I had allergies to cats when I was younger as well, but I had one cat who “inoculated” me when he was a kitten by using me as a ladder. I seem to have built up an immunity thanks to all of the wee claw pricks. Not recommending this method, though…

Looking forward to seeing what mischief this kitten will get into, as they’re very good at that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Victoria it is much safer for me to just let Maisie have a cat because if the day came when I was no longer allergic I would probably immediately adopt a dozen! Ha ha ha! I think cats are the most fascinating creatures. Maisie will have a ball with the kitten and I can have fun with Maisie! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Yay! What a delightful way to have a want satisfied. I couldnโ€™t have pets for years because of the places I lived. Rentals wonโ€™t let you paint your walls. They donโ€™t let you have pets. But now I have two dogs and a lovely cat. And a fenced yard and flowers and trees. God is good. Love to you and, Maitri.

    • Thank you sweet Marge and I’m so happy that you finally settled in a place where you can have your beloved furry companions. I honestly don’t understand people who don’t have any, I mean I’m not criticizing, but my babies bring me so much comfort and love I couldn’t be without them. And of course Miss Molly is at the top of the list! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I am so in love with Maisie. She is joy, warmth, and vibrant colour. I am so glad she can have a cat.

    • Thank you so much dear Cathryn, your comment made my heart happy. I love Maisie too. She fills me with joy. And yes, a wee kitten has come along. This is going to be fun! ๐Ÿ™‚ And I loved seeing your Facebook page with all your fabulous little books! They are so charming…
